பயோடெக்னாலஜி சுகாதார, மருத்துவம், விவசாயம், உணவு, மருந்துகள் மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் கட்டுப்பாட்டு முன்வைக்கும் பொருட்கள் தயாரிக்க வாழும் உயிரினங்களில் மற்றும் உயிரியல் அமைப்புகளில் கையாள பொறியியல் தொழில்நுட்பங்கள் உயிரியல் அறிவியல் ஒருங்கிணைக்கிறது என்று மிகவும் பலதுறை துறையில் உள்ளது. ஆர் & டி உயிரியல் அறிவியல் மற்றும் தொழில்துறை செயல்முறைகளுக்கு: பயோடெக்னாலஜி இரண்டு பெரும் பிரிவுகளாக வகைப்படுத்தலாம். உயிரியல் அறிவியல் அம்சங்களிலும் போன்ற நுண்ணுயிரியல், செல் உயிரியல், மரபியல், நிகழ்வு மற்றும் நோய் சிகிச்சை, விவசாயத்தின் வளர்ச்சி, உணவு உற்பத்தி, சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு மற்றும் இன்னும் பல புரிந்து கொள்வதற்கான மூலக்கூறு உயிரியல் போன்ற பகுதிகளில் ஆராய்ச்சி மற்றும் வளர்ச்சி மேற்கொள்கின்றன. உயிரியல் அறிவியல் R & D வேலையை மிக ஆய்வக மேற்கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. தொழில்துறை செயல்முறைகள் அம்சம் உயிர்வேதியியல் செயல்முறைகள் மற்றும் நுட்பங்களை பயன்படுத்தி ஒரு தொழில்துறை அளவில் மருந்துகள், தடுப்பூசிகள், எரிபொருள்களின் மற்றும் மருந்துகள் உற்பத்தி மேற்கொள்கின்றன.

The Science club & Eco club of Marudhar Kesari Jain College for Women, Planted herbal tress to develop it into a botanical garden on19-10-2016. Principal Sir followed by Department HODs & students planted trees.

BIOTECHNOLOGY ADVANCES AND APPLICATIONS

Biotechnology is technology based on biology - biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. The biological processes of microorganisms make useful food products, such as bread and cheese, and to preserve dairy products.

Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products for rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.

Currently, there are more than 250 biotechnology health care products and vaccines available to patients, many for previously untreatable diseases. More than 13.3 million farmers around the world use agricultural biotechnology to increase yields, prevent damage from insects and pests and reduce farming's impact on the environment.  Biorefineries are being built and refine technologies to produce biofuels and chemicals from renewable biomass, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Recent advances in biotechnology are

Ø  Heal The World by Reducing rates of infectious disease, Saving millions of children's lives  Changing the odds of serious, life-threatening conditions affecting millions around the world, treatments to individuals to minimize health risks and side effects.

Ø  Fuel the World  by Improving manufacturing process efficiency to save 50% or more on operating costs, Using biofuels to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 52% or more, Decreasing water usage and waste generation.

Ø  Feed the World by Generating higher crop yields with fewer inputs, Developing crops with enhanced nutrition profiles that solve vitamin and nutrient deficiencies,  Producing foods free of allergens and toxins such as mycotoxin , and improving food and crop oil content to help improve cardiovascular health.

Biotechnology has applications in health care (medical), crop production and agriculture, non food (industrial) uses of crops and other products (e.g. biodegradable plastics, vegetable oil, biofuels), and environmental uses.  Biotechnology is also used to recycle, treat waste, cleanup sites contaminated by industrial activities (bioremediation), and also to produce biological weapons.

 Branches of biotechnology:

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field using computational techniques, and makes the rapid analysis of biological data. Bioinformatics plays a key role in various areas, such as functional genomics, structural genomics, and proteomics, and forms a key component in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector.

Blue biotechnology is a term that has been used to describe the marine and aquatic applications of biotechnology, but its use is relatively rare.

Green biotechnology is biotechnology applied to agricultural processes. Designing of transgenic plants to grow under specific environments in the presence (or absence) of chemicals. The engineering of a plant to express a pesticide, thereby ending the need of external application of pesticides. An example of this would be Bt corn.

Red biotechnology is applied to medical processes. Some examples are the designing of organisms to produce antibiotics

White biotechnology also known as industrial biotechnology, is biotechnology applied to industrial processes. The designing of an organism to produce useful chemical. Using of enzymes as industrial catalysts to either produce valuable chemicals or destroy hazardous/polluting chemicals.

Every year the department is conducting state level or national level seminars with eminent speakers.
2007-2008:
On 27-8-2007 the department conducted special meeting on “Recent trends in medical biochemistry & medical biotechnology”. Dr.H.S.MuthuMohammed  was the resource person.
On 3-3-2008 the department conducted State level seminar on “Recent Trends in Medicinal Plants Research”. The resource persons were Dr.V.Palani, Dr.P.Agustian, Mr.M.Antostephen.
2009-2010:
On 15-12-2009 the department conducted seminar on “ Innovations & Career prospects in Bioinformatics”. Mr.R.Jesu Jeya Sudan was the resource person.
On 12-2-2010 the department conducted special meeting on “ Ecology for common Man”. The resource person was Dr. Sudandhira Doss.
2010-2011:
On 26-8-2010 the department conducted special meeting on “ Biotechnological Approach to Overcome Global Warming”. Dr.L.R.Gopinath was the resource person.
On 28-1-2011 & 29-01-2011 the department conducted 2 days state level workshop cum seminar on Bioinformatics. Mr.R.Jesu Jeya Sudan was the resource person.
2011-2012:
On 26-9-2011 the department conducted state level workshop on “Milk Processing”. The resource persons were Dr.S.Saraswathi, Dr.B.Rajesh kumar.
On 25-1-2012 the department conducted National level conference on “Emerging trends in Biosciences”. The resource persons were Dr.Soma chaki, Mr.M.Antostephen, Mr.S.Umesh kumar, Dr.Ajit kumar.
2012-2013:
On 8-8-2012 the department conducted State level seminar on “The New Vistas in Bioproducts & Neurobiology”. The resource persons were Dr.Uvarajan, Dr.T.P.Sastry.
On 20-12-2012 the department conducted special meeting on “Infectious diseases”. The resource person was Dr. Varadharajan, ENT specialist.
On 9-03-2013 Mr.Mayur Abhaya, CEO, from Life Cell International gave speech on Stem cell research.
Department highlights:
On 19-12-2009 the department arranged industrial visit to sai’s bioscience research institute, Chennai. About 66 students visited the institute.
On 30-7-2010 the department visited Tamilnadu Agricultural University Coimbatore and Doddabetta tea factory(Ooty) on 31-7-2010.
On 28-7-2011 the department arranged industrial visit to National Institute of Oceanography, Kochi. On 29-7-2011 the deparment visited Rajiv Gandhi centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvanandhapuram .
On 28-9-2012 the department attended one day training programme on Mushroom cultivation at Tamil Nadu Agriculture Institute, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vellore.
Apart from these achievements the department is providing value added course like Medical Lab technician (MLT).

On 3-10-2011 Miss S. Swarnamugi presented paper at Sri Nandhanam College of Engineering and technology at thirupatur and won 3rd prize.
On 3-10-2011 Miss V.Sona presented poster at Sri Nandhanam College of Engineering and technology at thirupatur and won 3rd prize.
On 15,16 february 2012 Miss S. Swarnamugi presented paper at Islamiah college vaniyambadi and won 3rd prize.
